Corporate Billed Car Leasing in the United Kingdom

Corporate Billed Car Leasing in the United Kingdom

A UK leasing company runs a credit check on the lessee. A newly arrived employee has no UK credit file, and a foreign company has no UK entity to check.

ExpatRide places the lease with a vetted UK partner. The company or its EOR signs one agreement with ExpatRide and receives one invoice a month, and the employee is driving within weeks of arrival.

For HR and global mobility teams moving an employee to the UK, procurement and finance teams who want one supplier and one invoice, and EORs or their clients employing people in the UK without a UK entity.

Approval depends on the financial standing of the head office, not on a local entity, and a non-binding quote takes one to two business days. Lease terms start at 12 months and hybrid and electric cars are quoted through EcoRide.

‍

How the UK lease works with ExpatRide

The company signs one agreement with ExpatRide. No UK entity, no co-signing, no deposit from the employee and no UK credit history. ExpatRide places the lease with a vetted UK partner, the assignee chooses the car with a Personal Car Shopper, and the company pays a fixed monthly amount for the length of the assignment.

What the lease includes

  • One agreement with ExpatRide. Approval rests on the financial standing of the head office, not on a UK entity or the employee’s credit file.
  • One invoice a month to the company, the RMC or the EOR, in the currency you choose, on 30-day terms. For EOR hires the invoice goes to the EOR or to the client, as the contract says.
  • Lease terms from 12 months, matched to the assignment. The monthly amount is fixed for the term. Early termination terms are in the quote before signing.
  • Hybrid and electric cars are quoted where available, through EcoRide. In the UK this matters more than anywhere because of the benefit in kind rates below.
  • A non-binding quote in one to two business days after passport and driver’s license are received. The visa is not needed to start, only to sign.
  • Vehicle availability in as little as two weeks, depending on model. A rental or chauffeur service covers the gap until the lease car is ready.

Benefit in kind: how an employer-provided car is taxed in the UK

A car the employer provides for private use is a taxable benefit in the UK. The taxable value is the car’s P11D value (list price plus options) multiplied by an appropriate percentage set by CO2 emissions; the employee pays income tax on that value at their marginal rate and the employer pays Class 1A National Insurance at 15% on it. For 2026/27 a zero-emission car is 4%, rising to 5% in 2027/28; petrol and diesel cars run up to 37%, with a 4% supplement for diesels that do not meet RDE2. A 40,000 pound electric car therefore creates a taxable benefit of 1,600 pounds a year (640 pounds of tax for a 40% taxpayer), while a comparable petrol car can be ten times that. The same rules apply to leased and owned cars.

This is general information for the 2026/27 tax year. The client’s UK payroll provider confirms the treatment; ExpatRide does not give tax advice.

Why a lease beats a cash allowance

A cash car allowance is taxed as salary and attracts employer National Insurance in full. An electric lease car at 4% of list price is one of the lowest-taxed benefits an employer can give, and a newly arrived employee cannot lease on their own anyway.

Driving in the UK on a foreign license

A new resident may drive on a full foreign car license for 12 months from the date they became resident. Licenses from the designated countries, among them Australia, Canada, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, South Africa, Switzerland, Hong Kong, the UAE and New Zealand, can be exchanged for a GB license without a test and must be exchanged within five years. Licenses from other countries, including the United States, India and China, are valid for the 12 months only; after that the employee needs a provisional license and must pass the UK theory and practical tests, so the test should be booked early. See the driving license rules by country before the lease starts.

What the lease partner needs

Passport, driver’s license, the UK address once known, and the company’s billing details. For EOR hires, the EOR’s name and who is invoiced. Send the monthly budget or the policy tier with the request and the Personal Car Shopper quotes within it.

Hiring through an Employer of Record?

A growing share of UK requests comes from EORs and their clients. The client has no UK entity, the EOR does not lease cars, and the employee cannot get credit locally. ExpatRide places the lease with its UK partner, approval rests on the client’s financial standing, and the invoice goes to the EOR or to the client, as the contract says. To start, send the lease request. Shorter assignment? See Car Rental. Executive relocation? See VIP Global Mobility.

FAQ

‍

Does the employee need a UK credit file or a UK bank account?
No for approval. Approval is based on the financial standing of the company, not on the employee. No UK credit history, deposit or co-signing is required.
Is a US or other non-exchangeable license a problem?
Not for the lease. For driving, a foreign license is valid for 12 months from the date of residence; after that the employee needs a GB license, which for non-designated countries means passing the UK theory and practical tests.
Can we lease an electric car in the UK?
Yes. Battery-electric and plug-in hybrid cars are quoted through EcoRide where the model is available. For a UK assignment an electric car is usually the cheapest option for the employee once benefit in kind is counted: 4% of the list price in 2026/27 against up to 37% for petrol and diesel.
How long does the lease process take in the UK?
A non-binding quote takes one to two business days once the passport and driver's license are in. Delivery depends on the model: stock cars can be ready in about two weeks, factory orders take longer. Sending documents early and staying flexible on model and color shortens the wait.
Who signs the lease, and does the company have to guarantee it?
The company signs one agreement with ExpatRide and receives the invoice. The company does not co-sign a local lease, does not pay a deposit and does not need an entity in the country. Approval is based on the financial standing of the head office, and the quote is non-binding until it is accepted.
How is a Corporate Billed Lease invoiced?
One invoice per month to the company, the RMC or the EOR, in the currency you choose, on 30-day payment terms. Insurance is included in the monthly amount in most locations. In a few countries direct billing is not available for leases; we tell you before quoting, and the assignee can still lease through our consumer program.
We hire through an Employer of Record and have no entity in the country. Can we still lease?
Yes. This is one of the most common requests we receive. Approval rests on the financial standing of the client company, not on a local entity, and the invoice goes to the EOR or directly to the client, whichever the contract requires. The employee goes through the same Personal Car Shopper process as any assignee. Tell us in the request form who should be invoiced.
What happens if the assignment ends early?
The early termination terms depend on the country and the lease partner and are set out in the quote before anyone signs. In most cases there is a termination fee or the remaining months are due. Where the company expects assignments to end early, tell us at the quote stage and the Personal Car Shopper will look for the shortest term and the lowest exit cost.
Who reports the benefit in kind?
The client's UK payroll reports it on the P11D or through payroll, and the employer pays Class 1A National Insurance on it. The company's cost is the fixed monthly lease invoice plus that National Insurance.
