Corporate Billed Car Leasing in Germany

Corporate Billed Car Leasing in Germany

A relocating employee in Germany needs a car before the first commute, and a German lessor will not lease to a company with no German entity or to an employee with no Schufa record.

ExpatRide places the lease with a vetted German partner. The company or its EOR signs one agreement with ExpatRide and receives one invoice a month, and the employee drives from the first week.

For HR and global mobility teams sending an assignee to Germany, procurement and finance teams who want one supplier and one invoice instead of a local contract, and EORs or their clients who employ people in Germany without a German entity.

Approval depends on the financial standing of the head office, not on a local entity, and a non-binding quote takes one to two business days. Lease terms start at 12 months and hybrid and electric cars are quoted through EcoRide.

‍

How the German lease works with ExpatRide

The company signs one agreement with ExpatRide. No German entity, no co-signing of a local lease, no deposit from the employee and no Schufa record. ExpatRide places the lease with a vetted German partner, the assignee chooses the car with a Personal Car Shopper, and the company pays a fixed monthly amount for the length of the assignment.

What the lease includes

  • One agreement with ExpatRide. Approval rests on the financial standing of the head office, not on a German entity or the employee.
  • One invoice a month to the company, the RMC or the EOR, in the currency you choose, on 30-day terms. For EOR hires the invoice goes to the EOR or to the client, as the contract says.
  • Lease terms from 12 months, matched to the assignment. The monthly amount is fixed for the term. Early termination terms are in the quote before signing.
  • Hybrid and electric cars are quoted where the German market supports them, through EcoRide.
  • A non-binding quote in one to two business days after passport and driver’s license are received. The residence permit is not needed to start, only to sign.
  • Vehicle availability in as little as two weeks, depending on model. A rental or chauffeur service covers the gap until the lease car is ready.

How private use is taxed in Germany

When an employer provides a car the employee may also use privately, German payroll adds a monthly benefit in kind. Under the standard rule it is 1% of the car’s German gross list price per month, plus 0.03% of the list price per kilometer of one-way commute. A battery-electric car is taxed at 0.25% a month when the list price is 100,000 euro or less (cars acquired from 1 July 2025), and at 0.5% above that. A plug-in hybrid is taxed at 0.5% when its electric range is at least 80 km or its CO2 is 50 g/km or less. A logbook replaces the flat rate with the actual private share of costs. The same rules apply whether the company owns or leases the car.

This is general information for 2026. The client’s German payroll provider confirms the treatment; ExpatRide does not give tax advice.

Why a lease beats a cash allowance

A cash car allowance is taxed as salary in full. An electric lease car at 0.25% of list price is often a lower taxable benefit for the employee and a predictable cost for the company, and the car stays in the company’s sustainability reporting.

Driving in Germany on a foreign license

An EU or EEA license is valid until it expires. A non-EU license is valid for six months from the date of address registration (Anmeldung), after which it must be exchanged. Licenses from the UK, Switzerland, Canada, Australia, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, South Africa and 28 US states are exchanged without a test; 11 US states need the theory test only; most other countries need the full theory and practical exam. A license not in German, English, French, Italian or Spanish needs a sworn translation. See the driving license rules by country before the lease starts.

What the lease partner needs

Passport, driver’s license, the German address once known, and the company’s billing details. For EOR hires, the EOR’s name and who is invoiced. Send the monthly budget or the policy tier with the request and the Personal Car Shopper quotes within it.

Hiring through an Employer of Record?

A growing share of German requests comes from EORs and their clients. The client has no German entity, the EOR does not lease cars, and the employee cannot get credit locally. ExpatRide places the lease with its German partner, approval rests on the client’s financial standing, and the invoice goes to the EOR or to the client, as the contract says. To start, send the lease request. Shorter assignment? See Car Rental. Executive relocation? See VIP Global Mobility.

FAQ

‍

Can the lease start before the residence permit is issued?
Yes. The process starts on the passport and driver's license; the permit is needed to finalize the agreement, and delivery is timed to the arrival date.
Does the employee need a Schufa record or a German bank account?
No. Approval is based on the financial standing of the company, not on the employee. No local credit history, deposit or co-signing is required.
Can we lease an electric car in Germany?
Yes. Battery-electric and plug-in hybrid cars are quoted through EcoRide where the model is available in Germany. For the employee an electric car is usually the lowest taxable benefit, at 0.25% of the list price a month.
How long does the lease process take in Germany?
A non-binding quote takes one to two business days once the passport and driver's license are in. Delivery depends on the model: stock cars can be ready in about two weeks, factory orders and some electric models take longer. Sending documents early and staying flexible on model and color shortens the wait.
Who signs the lease, and does the company have to guarantee it?
The company signs one agreement with ExpatRide and receives the invoice. The company does not co-sign a local lease, does not pay a deposit and does not need an entity in the country. Approval is based on the financial standing of the head office, and the quote is non-binding until it is accepted.
How is a Corporate Billed Lease invoiced?
One invoice per month to the company, the RMC or the EOR, in the currency you choose, on 30-day payment terms. Insurance is included in the monthly amount in most locations. In a few countries direct billing is not available for leases; we tell you before quoting, and the assignee can still lease through our consumer program.
We hire through an Employer of Record and have no entity in the country. Can we still lease?
Yes. This is one of the most common requests we receive. Approval rests on the financial standing of the client company, not on a local entity, and the invoice goes to the EOR or directly to the client, whichever the contract requires. The employee goes through the same Personal Car Shopper process as any assignee. Tell us in the request form who should be invoiced.
What happens if the assignment ends early?
The early termination terms depend on the country and the lease partner and are set out in the quote before anyone signs. In most cases there is a termination fee or the remaining months are due. Where the company expects assignments to end early, tell us at the quote stage and the Personal Car Shopper will look for the shortest term and the lowest exit cost.
Who pays the 1% benefit in kind?
The benefit is added to the employee's taxable salary by the client's German payroll; it is the employee's tax, not a payment to ExpatRide. The company's cost is the fixed monthly lease invoice. With an electric car the benefit is 0.25% of the list price a month instead of 1%.
