    The following is required for a lease:

Practical Information on Driving in UAE

Speed Limits

Freeway 100–160 km/h (62–99 mph)
Rural Roads 80–100 km/h (50–62 mph)

Alcohol & Driving

Don’t do it! Motorists caught mixing driving with drinking will get a maximum fine of Dh20,000 and/ or a jail term to be decided by the court, 23 black points, and confiscation of the vehicle for 60 days.

Kids in Cars

Children up to four years of age must be provided with a child safety seat. Violators will be fined AED 400 and slapped with four black points. The front seat passenger should also be at least 145 cm tall and not younger than 10 years old.

Minimum Age

The legal age to drive in the UAE is 18.

Expat Auto Insurance

According to the UAE RTA law, it is mandatory for all vehicle owners to get car insurance cover.

Phone & Driving

Using phones while driving or any other distractions will be attract AED 400 fine and four black points

Seat Belts

All passengers in a car are required to wear seat belts including those sitting in the rear seat, failing which the driver of the vehicle will be fined AED 400 and slapped with four black points.

Driver's License

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has confirmed that a tourist or visitor can drive a Dubai-registered car in the UAE if they have an international driving license. All other nationalities must also obtain an International Driving Permit which is available in a home country or via Emirates Post in the UAE.

How to Exchange your foreign driver’s license / Reciprocity Agreements

You will need to go to your local Service Center with the following documents:

• Original driver’s license, with copies.
• Emirates ID, with copies.
• Passport-sized photos.
• Eye test report (this can be done at any optician)
• Arabic-language translation of your driver’s license (only applies to some countries)
