Speed Limits

Town and city: 50 km/h
Open Roads: 90 km/h
Motorways: 120 km/h

Kids in Cars

Children under 3 years of age can travel without a child seat or seat belt, but only in the back seat and children aged 3 years or older can travel without a child seat if they wear an adult seat belt.

Minimum Age

The minimum age to drive a car in Hungary is 17 years. Drivers must have a valid driving license and be 17 years old or older.


When driving in Hungary the following documents should be carried: Full, valid driving license Proof of insurance/green card (third party or above) Proof of ID.

Phone & Driving

The use of mobile phones whilst driving is illegal unless you use a hands-free system.

Alcohol and driving

Don’t do it! In Hungary, it is absolutely forbidden to drive any type of motor vehicle after having consumed alcoholic drinks. If the amount of alcohol in a motorists’ blood is less than 0.08%, he/she will be fined; if the amount is over 0.08%, he/she will be subject to legal proceedings.

Expat Auto Insurance

All holders of vehicles in Hungary must be insured. They must take out a policy for vehicle civil liability insurance and pay a fee for it.

Seat Belt Laws

The use of seat belts, in Hungary, is compulsory for the driver, the front and the rear passengers. In the event that any of the passengers did not fastened seat belts, the penalty will be charged with this passenger.

Driver's License

The foreign driving license accompanied by the attested Hungarian translation entitles to drive in Hungary for a period of one year from the starting date of residing in Hungary. As regards the attested translations only the translations made by the National Office for Translation and Attestation can be accepted.

How to Exchange your foreign driver’s license to a Hungary Driver’s License

The local Office for Administrative and Electronic Public Services is responsible for driving license exchanges. The license holder should go to the office in their place of residence and request an exchange. The following documents are needed in support of a driving license exchange:

• Proof that the duty has been paid

The usual procedure is that the local Office for Administrative and Electronic Public Services issues a postal cheque which must be paid for at the nearest post office, and then returned to the office. Some offices have a post office on their premises
There are, however, different rules for different nationalities, especially those who are from countries that are not signatories of the 1968 Vienna Convention. For some nationalities only an official translation is needed, while other applicants will have to pass a driving test.
